Day One. The joys of electronic travel...... (Melbourne to Singapore)

 The seven of us succeeded in getting to the airport on time having achieved varying amounts of compliance with some of the new electronic processes - Arrival forms for Singapore, boarding passes etc.Whilst travelling as part of a group has its advantages there were a few cases of mistaken identity where peoples boarding passes and identitiies were switched and several people ended up with everyone's documents rather than just theirs!! Or in one case someone else's document completely. The mixture of printed and electronic documents was confusing and messy but fortunately airline staff were clearly accustomed to groups of ladies with various bits of papers and electronic forms!!

We are good at asking for help (and it was needed!) but we did manage to get all six of us on the right flight at the right time with luggage with the right tags on!! Truly a miracle!

The seven hour flight took seven long hours as you would expect, punctuated by watching films you may not have bothered to watch at home, naps and food and beverages.

Then the confusion reigned at the Changi Airport Hotel as there is room sharing happening. It would be fair to say that the Reception staff were a little confused by the arrangements but eventually we headed off to our rooms!We met up with the seventh member of our group Kerryn, and whiled away a few ours with antipasto,  cocktails , live music and lots of catching up. Then we turned into complete party animals: ie.had cups of tea and went to bed.

Our last full day in Laos was jam-packed with some lovely experiences. Jan and I did our usual walk early in the morning and decided to walk along the Mekong to check out Thailand on the other side of the river. There was a lot of mud and a large muddy bank before the River itself so there wasn't a lot to see apart from lots of huge hotels. Souk came to collect us and we set off for a special House and garden about 20 kms out of Vientiane. It was great to escape the noisy city and enjoy the countryside. Much of the area had been bombed during 'The Secret War' and there was evidence of that when we saw some gateposts made of large bomb cases outside a house. We arrived at an oasis: lush garden, airy wooden buildings and locally-made decorations swinging in the breeze. Reflections on our trip to Laos

Laos is an intriguing and wonderful place to visit. Whilst tourists are very welcome, and there is a lot of enthusiasm for increasing tourist numbers, we were glad to be here at a time when it is not a tourist paradise overwhelmed with foreigners. The tragic history of Laos reflects the history of many Asian countries; strong royal families lose power after many centuries of rule to local and foreign countries intent on profiting from the resources within. Everchanging country borders add to the disruption. But Laos has more recently been the victim of war - the 'Secret War' - the repercussions of which continue today in the form of thousands of unexploded bombs distributed along the Ho Chi Minh trail. The ethics and morality of bombing a small insignificant country (popn. 1970: 2.7m) was not considered by the Americans as they were intent on preventing the expansion of communism. An unsuccessful endeavour that resulted in loss of life for many Americans ....and Australians...

Be prepared!

Are we there yet? Over a week to go so the pressure to pack properly is increasing, as is the excitement of going overseas to a relatively unknown but promising place. One of the essentials is to check whether I can actually write a blog on my new tablet and tiny bluetooth keyboard: hence this post! It appears to work! Phew! I can't say that it is wise to purchase new technology just prior to a trip but I have a new tablet and a new phone as both devices appeared to be on the verge of collapse - great timing!  However I went a step too far and attempted to use Wordpress instead of Blogger to create a blog! What a nightmare! So here we are with a Blogger blog.....  As my knowledge of Laos is based on a few days spent there some years ago, I thought I needed to update myself.
